Episode 271 – November 25, 2011

Turkey Trot

Participants trickle into the Turkey Trot

Overcast and chilly weather didn’t stop 325 or so participants from joining the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. People from Scott Valley and beyond gathered at Hamlin Gulch for the 3 mi walk/run and 6 mi run. The elementary school themed long sleeve t-shirts were sold out! Heaters were provided to keep the racers warm until the start time. Bagels, bananas, and apples were provided along with water, coffee, cider and hot chocolate.

See the Clever Turkey Hats!

The Turkey Trot portion of the podcast includes the start, the results, and an interview with Levi White who won the 3 mi. men’s division.

Becky Travis to Cross Country State

I also got an opportunity to have a quick interview with my niece, Becky Travis, who is going to Fresno this weekend to compete in the State Championships. John Wheelan from Etna High School is also going and is expected to place first and possibly set a state record. All the best to our runners!

Scott Valley Family Resource Center Giving Tree

Giving Tree Open Until December 9

The Scott Valley Family Resource Center holds a Giving Tree Event each year to help families give a gift to their child for the holidays. The gifts are for families of Scott Valley only!

To help give a gift for the Giving Tree, please take an ornament for the particular child you would like to buy a gift for. Bring the unwrapped gift back to either this site [Etna Post Office is one] or the Scott Valley Family Resource Center located in Fort Jones along with the ornament. The gifts will be picked up from this site no later than Friday, December 9th, 2011. If you know of a family that would like to sign up for the Giving Tree or have any questions please call 468-2450.

American Legion Flag Fundraiser

Many of you may not know that on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the
American Legion Post 260 places a small American Flag at each Veteran’s
gravesite in local cemeteries. They also attend each Veteran funeral to
present The Colours and honour the Veteran with a special remembrance
ceremony.
They are in need of funds to purchase more flags for the gravesites.
As a Fund-raiser for the ‘American Flag Fund’ of American Legion Post 260:
the 1947 Mine & Mineral Map showing mineral deposit and mines has been
reprinted. Map size is 24″ x 32″ and is THE PERFECT GIFT that
just keeps on giving . . .

It is our local history,
it’s supporting an owner-run business,
it benefits our Community,
it honours our local Veterans . . .

The price is a mere $10 and proceeds will be donated to the ‘Flag Fund’ of Post 260.
Checks should be made payable to American Legion Post 260.
Maps are available at Etna Hardware and the Callahan Emporium or by
calling Che’usa Wend at (467-5815) or emailing her at etnanews@sisqtel.net ).
For you out-of-town folks, Che’usa will make arrangements to mail you the
map (total cost $15, which includes the map).

Native Daughters Fundraiser

Hot off the press:
the new re-published 1905 book titled ‘The Empire of the Mountains, Scott Valley
and Western Siskiyou’. It talks about Siskiyou County, Yreka, Scott Valley and
has wonderful photos from all over the valley, plus old advertisements from that vintage.

This re-publishment was underwritten by the Native Daughters of the
Golden West in Etna as a fund-raiser for their Museum.
The price is $10 and proceeds will be donated to the Native Daughters of the
Golden West and their Museum.

Order a book from a local ‘Native Daughter’ or by calling Che’usa
at (467-5815) or emailing her at etnanews@sisqtel.net ). Again for you
out-of-town folks, Che’usa will make arrangements to mail you the
book (total cost $13,  which includes the book).

As always, we appreciate your feedback. Did you like the transition music? I decided to put it back in to see if it made a difference.
